History says that in the 1950’s the Thai Silk industry was revitalised by an American businessman who goes by the name of Jim Thompson. However, looking closer you will see that the people who were putting in the time and labour to create these materials were the Thai citizens. The Thai people created silk based off of designs that not only contained stereotypical images such as elephants and monkeys, but also materials branded with the name of someone who was not ethnically Thai.
With an installation of hand woven materials and films documenting the process, I have revitalised and taken back my own culture. Using deconstructed traditional readymade Thai materials to recreate a new form or Thai material that not only was designed by a Thai person but was made by a Thai person.
